The career of our own founding musician, Tom Butler, is both rich with stories and impressive in scope. Here, we dive a little deeper into some of his history, accomplishments, and favorite moments in music.

How did you get your start in music?

The Butler Family Band

As a kid, my family was very musically gifted. In fact, we had a musical ensemble in Pittsburgh called the Butler Family, in which each of us 5 siblings played an instrument or sang (I was on banjo and clarinet), and my parents even participated, too. We traveled the Northeast performing at all kinds of venues, including Carnegie Hall.

From there, I went to Duquesne University to receive my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, then became a professional performer as a young adult.

What instruments do you play?

Over the years, I’ve added many different instruments to my repertoire: piano, guitar, banjo, and all the woodwind instruments (clarinet, flute, and each type of saxophone). I’ve even picked up the accordion, a more recent discovery of mine and fun instrument to play Italian music.

Have you ever performed with anyone famous?

I’ve been fortunate enough to have performed with the musical talents of Tony Bennett, Enrique Iglesias, The Temptations, London Symphony Orchestra, Maureen McGovern, Ray Charles and Moody Blues, just to name a few.

Tell us about your favorite gigs of all time.

One of my favorite gigs was performing with Ray Charles, traveling all over Florida. I contracted and performed in the orchestra — a true honor to play alongside such a legend.

In addition to that, I have always enjoyed performing at Disney including Tarzan Rocks, Hollywood Sax Quintet, and the Yacht and Beach Club Trio. The Moody Blues has to be up there, as well, with their impressive orchestrations and fantastic music.

Do you specialize in any certain styles of music?

Foremost, my specialty is Jazz — from solo piano to big band. Beyond, that, I love playing tunes from the 40s through 70s, as well as Italian music.

What’s your favorite part about being a musician?

The feeling and flow of performing is by far the best part of being a musician. I love the diversity of each performance, and getting to bring joy to audiences big and small.
