Being based in Florida, one of the top destinations for retirees, we have a unique demographic we’re able to entertain and serve with our music. There is so much research and countless anecdotes that support music therapy’s effects on the memory and spirit of the elderly, and we’re happy to have seen this firsthand.
More and more, we’re finding that assisted living facilities and retirement communities call upon us to come play for their residents. So, what does that entail?
Music for the elderly audience
Playing songs this generation recognizes and remembers can truly light up the room. Oftentimes, we make an activity out of the performance, playing older tunes from the ‘30s – ’60s and inviting the audience to sing (and dance!) along. Providing lyric sheets and interactive voice-over also help encourage and guide participation.
The most popular instrument is the piano with its versatility and accessibility, but adding a vocalist, violinist, or horn gives it another dimension that inspires engagement.
